Too many things I do run faster in OS 9 and Linux. And X's hardware support
 sux.

Could you go into greater depth on this, perhaps? [wrings hands]

My work horse is a PM 7300/180, running OS 9.2.2.

For my basic tasks, the only thing OS X does for me is require that I use a *much* faster computer. The few web sites (two currently) I can't access using iCab or Moz don't work from Safari either. They require IE on a PC. ...Usta be 3 sites, but I closed that credit card account when they told me they had no plans to support Macs.

Work I do for my clients is another matter. I have several specialized apps that don't run in X or Classic. The necessary s/w updates will cost around $1600 when they're available - perhaps in late 2005. I additionally loose access to two scanners and a printer here at home. Replacing that hardware would cost around $12,000. And since my clients use "much larger" versions of the same hardware, they were locked into OS 9 for their depriciation cycle. This changed recently - they're switching to XP.

the talk of OS X's stability appeals strongly to me.

Me too. But... Except for two specific instances, my 7300 is 100% stable.

1) IPNetMonitor has a bug that causes it to crash maybe once a month. A quick ES in MacsBug recovers; no reboot is really necessary.

2) Thoth. Yes, I download "stuff" from USENET. :) I'm not a fan of HogWasher and *-NewsWatcher doesn't support yEnc on OS 9. So Thoth is my yEnc-supporting poison of choice. Very flakey app; able to kill whole partitions in a single crash! I just don't use it when I have other things running, and I have it download to its own volume.

My point is that OS 9, on its own, is VERY stable. The problem is the 3rd party extensions and applications you run. If you find the right mix, stability is managable. Remember too that NO system is 100% stable ever! heh. I've already frozen up our new PB (Panther) half a dozen times!

So, anyone care to help prop up my flaccid ego until I can make the switch?

Switch Encouragement... I need that too. :) It's a process, I guess. There are things that we didn't do yesterday that we can't live without today. What's tomorrow got?

These are the top current things that are making me want OS X on a *fast* machine:

QuickTime 6 works. QT 6 on OS 9 bites. It's slow crap. It's playback framerate is about 80%, at best, of what QT 5 did. Worse if you want to view MPEG-4 stuff. QT 6 is such bad bloatware that it *needs* a supercomputer to run.

Video Editing. The future of Macs -- easy porno production! *duck* er a, do your own high-quality caps of your home movies. Add captions and a schmaltzy sound track then email 'em to all your relativies. Gotta use their 1 GB Gmail accts for something!

Better Java. This means you can view some kick-ass web sites better and play some of those cute games.

What else?

:)
