I've finished the design and costing for the level adapters for macs that only have a mic level input. i've also designed and priced the same with a subsonic filter and also with an instrumentation amplifier input to drastically reduce hum.
I can provide a passive level adapter for: $9.00 an active level adapter, which should help somewhat with hum for: $16.00 An active adapter with a subsonic filter for: $22.00, this will reduce distortion from subsonics created by playing warped records. I can provide an active adapter, with subsonic filter and an instrumentation amplifier input which should eliminate hum for: $30.00 sadly inamps are expensive and i have not been able to find a surplus source, and it is inamps that allow virtually complete elimination of hum (any signal on both the shield and conductor will be reduced at least 70db, this will eliminate hum on the cable and from equipment not being grounded in most cases, though it's best to simply try grounding your turntable and amplifier first as hum also increases distortion in your' amplifier and that can't be undone). any of the active units can be set up to produce a line level output instead of the mic level output, or to provide both mic and line level output for an additional $0.50 (for a fixed line level output). With the line level output option these would be useful for macs with a line level input or those with an imic who have hum or subsonic problems. all units have an adjustable output level for mic level output only, for adjustable line level output add $3.00 unless you do not need a mic level output in which case an adjustable line level output would not increase the price. (this should not be necessary in most cases). The active units include a wall mount power supply (actually cheaper than batteries and holders, and better), the passive unit does not use any power. They will have 2 RCA jacks for input and an 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo jack for output unless you prefer different connectors. I'm using amplifiers that produce 0.003% THD or less, far better than most amps and certainly better than any turntable (and better than my above average ears). If someone needs a slightly different adapter please let me know, i have done most of the work of designing these and sourcing affordable but good quality components (all fixed resistors will be low noise metal film type) and all will be in metal cases. Please let me know if you will need cables and i can price those as well. someone wanted an adapter so they could hook a guitar directly to their mac, this is an easy modification. since i'm building these i can be extremely flexible and make nearly any design changes you want. Please Let me know which units you will want and when you will be able to pay. I'd like to order parts next Tuesday. I need to have a good idea of how many parts to purchase as each order for parts has some overhead for shipping and handling, and i am getting parts from 2 sources. I will accept money orders only. prices do not include shipping, probably by priority mail or fedex, your' choice (priority mail will probably be cheaper as these should all be well under 1 Lb. each). Please let me know exactly what you want, and if you want anything different than what i've mentioned above. with my design time and parts locating time i will be making far less than minimum wage for producing these, but i am happy to do it. to make it easier for me to sort my email please maintain the subject heading as it is on all replies. I would be happy to ship these to any country, though obviously shipping will be more. I would consider some trades, but as i'm expending cash to do this, i will need cash from most of those interested. I will be responding individually to those who want modifications etc. later today and as people request/suggest modifications. again, since i'm doing all the work i can be very flexible and these will be very well made. besides, they actually wouldn't be much cheaper using lower quality parts in most cases, and i don't make junk, even on request. ;) also please excuse the cross posting to the G list, since this is primarily of interest to those with certain G3 models and not all of them are on the swap list i wanted them to know as well, and i posted to the swap list as i'm willing to make similar custom units for other machines.
