I had the same problem with Apple Mail that came with 10.3:

  It has the content-type: multipart/alternative,

I don't know WHAT is causing this.
There is no HTML, graphics or special characters.>>

Someone else on the list clued me in to go to the Format menu and choose Make Plain Text (instead of Rich Text) which fixed it. Don't know about Outlook or other e-mail clients, but suspect similar situations.

And I assume Brian meant "reply" which in some e-mail clients apparently automatically copies the entire original text into the reply--I suppose there is a preference or other option to stop that function, right?
