Dunno who misled all of you into thinking this is illegal, its not. As long as its your copy, you bought it, then yes you can make backup copies for private, personal use. Lawyers say this covers old vinyl too.

Under the old copyright act, copying copyrighted material in full for personal use was explicitly covered by "fair use". Under the DMCA it is not explicitly covered. The RIAA/MPAA's POV is that it is therefore NOT covered. It's being tested in court.


And the court test may be moot, of course, because them there congress critters are preparing to "update" the DMCA. So their latest bonehead paid-off moves will have to be retested in court...
