A little bit off topic but the only times I have seen a SUN SPARC Workstation server panic was 100% hardware related (this includes Host Bus Adapter Drivers).
I daily compare the stabity of my Mac to a SUN SPARC server. Hardware is always my first guess at a kernel panic on a "stable" system.
A general rule of thumb - Software Don't Break... A sudden problem that re-occurs out of the blue, good chance its hardware.
Never underestimate the *cough* quality of Apple's software. Way too few people working QA...
IOW, when a FreeBSD or another true *nix system panics, my bet is usually hardware (or perhaps the driver I'm currently debugging). But when OS X panics... *smirk*
