I have just bought a second hand Epson USB -> Parallel cable, but it won't work using Panther (someone on the list said that using Panther would eliminate the need for GhostScript or whatever. Does anyone have a simple solution for using this cable with a Mac running Panther ?
Don't have experience with your specific cable, but I've used a few other brands and know the setup:
1) Attach your printer with the USB->Parallel cable and power it on.
2) In Terminal application type: lpinfo -v <hit the Return key, there is a space before the dash>.
This command is short for "Line Printer information -verbose" and it will give the information you'll need.
Look in the output for something like "usb://HEWLETT-PACKARD/DESKJET%20660C?serial=0" except with the name of your printer. Highlight this long description and Copy it to the clipboard for later use. Don't copy the first word, probably "direct" but only from "usb" onward. This is called the Uniform Resource Identifier or URI.
3) In Printer Setup Utility, hold the "option" key when you click the button "Add a Printer". This will give you the "advanced" menu. In the Advanced Menu, first look in the scroll menu for "Device" and see if your exact or near exact printer model is already listed at the bottom of the list. If it is, then select it. If it is not listed, then select "USB Printer". In either case, you'll what to fill in the field "Device Name" with whatever you want it to be called (John's Printer or whatever), and then look at the field "Device URI" This is what you copied to the clipboard from Terminal. This field needs to be exactly what you copied from the Terminal earlier. Make certain it is exactly what you copied, or delete & Paste what you copied earlier so that the correct URI is entered. Under the Printer Model scroll menu scroll to select your exact Printer manufacturer. A new scroll menu will appear with all of the installed drivers for your printer. Select a compatible driver and hit the "Add" button. You should now be done.
If this doesn't work because of problems in Printer Setup Utility, you can always use the CUPS setup page which is browser based. You open any browser and go to the address http://localhost:631/ . This is the CUPS setup page installed on your computer by OS X. If it asks for a login & password, these are your own ~user login name & password. Again, the Setup is similar to what you just did. The only special information necessary is the Device URI that you get from Terminal command lpinfo -v. Follow the instructions to add a printer and you should be going.
