no! firewire is i believe 26V (at least on desktop macs, i believe it can vary over a
fairly large range) and is
converted inside the firewire device to the voltages that the firewire drive etc.
need, it's not a reversible process.
what's confusing you is thinking that things just run off the battery. actually, a
laptop and an ipod both have
internal switching power supplies to get the voltages they need from what they specify
as inputs, you can't just apply
power to a random power output and have the power supplies magically work in reverse,
it's much more complicated than
that.

honest, you have to provide power in where the device wants it, only things designed
to draw power from something else
over firewire can be powered through a firewire port, a laptop that supplies power
through that port will not accept
power coming in from that port, if you are lucky it won't work, but there's a good
chance of damaging the laptop, and
your adapter. don't try it unless you want to let all of the expensive smoke come out
of the parts (and it's very hard
to get the smoke back in). fyi, i've designed power supplies and battery chargers,
and equipment that ran off power
supplies, it doesn't work the way you seem to think it does.

Why are republicans afraid of the U.N. observing our elections? Do U.S. citizens
deserve less than those of other
countries? <http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article6505.htm> In many states
citizens still have the option of
using a paper ballot, if they ask. I urge all voters to demand the right to vote on
paper and create an auditable
election. There is something fundamentally wrong when voting machines are designed to
not provide any physical record
of votes.
