iPod Lounge had a thread on this, an apparently not uncommon problem.

Solution: Rest the iPod (!).

Hold down Menu and Play at the same time for appx 6 secs. This may have
to be repeated. The Apple logo should appear and all will be well. Your
music *will* still be there.
