For some reason which I don't understand, the 8500 volume keeps disappearing from the iMac, (perhaps when there is no action). I then fumble around trying to make it reappear. Finally, it reappears on the iMac for me to sign in again. Not only do I not know what caused it to disappear but I don't know what finally causes it to reappear.

This sounds like my disappearing external FireWire drives. There are three of them, and they come and they go on the desktop on startup, sometimes one missing, or two, sometimes all gone. Usually they show up again on startup, and when one or more don't, a restart sometimes finds them; otherwise I wiggle the FireWire cables, or change the cables out for others, and try to decide whether it had any effect or whether a restart would have caused them to appear anyway. This never happens under OS 9, only 10.5.3.
