Philip Stortz claimed that the series mode surge suppressors (Brick Wall, Zero Surge, SurgeX) are not used by the military, and offered this claim as "proof" that they are a scam.
You will find numerous military clients on the Zero Surge customer list, under the Government listing. http://www.zerosurge.com/HTML/custlistres.html You will find listed the Fermi National Acclerator Laboratory and the Goddard Space Flight Center. Perhaps Philip can contact them to either educate them on their serious lack of technical knowledge, or possibly to get some information which will make him re-evaluate his position. Also offered as "proof" of the scam was Philip's assertion that the technology is not being used by commercial clients who are protecting vast amounts of expensive equipment. I offer the Zero Surge customer list for your consideration. Below is copied an official rebuttal from the inventor, which I recieved from the Brick Wall company. David Dudine ____________________ Regarding the assertion that Brick Wall powerline surge suppression products claims are snake oil claims: The series-mode technology used by Brick Wall is covered under patent 6,728,089. A detailed technical description of the technology can be viewed at the US government patent office website USPTO.GOV. Search for patent 6,728,089. This is a 10 page technical document, reviewed by and adopted by the US government after a thorough 2 year review. This document describes the technology and performance in detail. Additional technical information can be found on the website www.zerosurge.com. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) certifies equipment safety. They also have an optional performance certification program called UL1449 Adjunct Classification. Under this program, a responsible manufacturer will ask UL to certify performance as well as safety. Independent verification of performance claims is important since a consumer does not have the equipment to check performance. The series-mode technology used in the Brick Wall products has been certified by UL to 1,000 B3/C1worst-case surges (6,000 Volts, 3,000 Amps) with a Suppressed Voltage Rating of 330 Volts. Zero Surge is not aware of ANY MOV based cord-connected 15 or 20 Amp load surge suppressors which have passed UL PEFORMANCE certification under the UL1449 Adjunct Classification program, and that meets the UL Suppressed Voltage Rating at 3,000 Amps of 330 Volts, after 1,000 B3/C1 applied surges (6,000 Volts, 3,000 Amps). If you are aware of any such products, simply supply us the UL file number which can be used to verify your findings. Series Mode technology has been in use for 15 years with NO history of power supply failures due to surges, since the surge suppression is so comprehensive. The Series-Mode technology has been used in products sold into the professional audio/video market for the last 10 years. Each year these sales have increased in this technology-critical market. The livelihood of these professionals depends on effective, reliable, safe equipment. Regarding Series-Mode technology: Surges consist of 3 major components: surge voltage, surge current and surge duration. Series Mode technology abates surge current with the series inductor. This inductor is followed by a dynamic voltage clamp which has zero offset voltage (clamps voltage IMMEDIATELY) as soon a surge exceeds the power wave peak voltage. Sense circuits then actually invert the surge and bring it below the power wave peak reducing the surge duration to where it can do no harm. MOV technology by contrast only clamps voltage without reducing surge current or duration, doing only 1/3 of the job. The MOV clamps surge voltage with a fixed clamping voltage set so high that all available surge current enters the protected power supply until the power supply charges up to the fixed clamping voltage onset, and then MOVs start to divert the remaining surge current to the neutral and ground wires. 3,000 Amp surges diverted onto the building ground wire can find their way into sensitive audio/video equipment, networks, modems, printers, and other peripherals which operate at milliamp and lower levels. Bad news. Regarding the Series-Mode input inductor: This is but one of many components used in the design. Following the inductor is the dynamic voltage clamp, which clamps at a far lower level than an MOV sized for this application. Following the dynamic clamp are the surge inverters, which remove any remaining surge energy. In summary, product claims substantiation should be a part of any reputable manufacturers marketing program. Reputable companies will have their products tested and performance certified to worst-case conditions, and be ready to share that information- unless they have something to hide. Competitors and naysayers of our technology who refute our claims have a responsibility to provide documentation of their claims with verifiable data from an independent lab. Jack R.
