For some strange reason, my daughter booted up her iMac and it went
straight to the Darwin console asking for a password. Her typical pass
doesn't seem to work and hard- restarting it doesn't change anything.
Aside from booting from the disk, what's a resolution to this?
The solution to nyour daughter's problem could be somewhere in here:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/ BPSystemStartup/C
oncepts/BootProcess.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/20002130/BAJJBJEG (all on one
line)
Seems her computer is hanging in the startup process, short one system
startup item ( CoreGraphics ? ).

Same thing happened to my G4. Wouldn't recognize my password. I couldn't change the start up disk without a CD. Still don't know why it took a boot up from CD to cure it.
