David Pogue's The Missing Manual OS X (get the version suitable to your OS eg 10.3).
Ditto to this and all the others who recommended Pogue's book. I just made my move from OS 9.2.2 to OS X Panther. Pogue's book was extremely helpful. The latest is "Mac OS X Panther Edition The Missing Manual."
A couple additional recommendations.
Let the first account that you make when going through the install/setup be your Administrator account. Immediately into your first running of OS X, create your additional user accounts, including one for troubleshooting. I mean do that before doing anything else. Then use one of your user accounts for the first use of your browsers and Mail.
Before running Safari, import any bookmarks/favorites into Internet Explorer 5.2. Then, when you open Safari the first time, it will pick up the bookmarks from IE. Otherwise, you'll have a bear of a time getting your bookmarks into Safari or you'll have to use a third party utility to manage your bookmarks. You may want to get that third part thing later anyway, but at your leisure.
The 2nd edition included an 18 page "Where'd it go?" appendix to help you
figure out what's replaced or moved what.
The Panther Edition has that appendix also.
