I've done this with PC's when upgrading the disk, it should work on Macs:
pull the cables from the CDR drive and connect it to your new drive (just
put the new drive anywhere convenient, leave the case open). Make sure it's
jumpered the same (master or slave) as the CDR. Then boot up and format if
necessary then copy the file to the new HD. Then you can turn off, put the
cables back on the CDR, and replace the old drive with the new one (again,
paying attention that the jumpers are the same as the one it's replacing).
