Many controls on my Epson printers just are not available in Panther.
On my Epson Stylus Photo 785EPX, I can't adjust the speed of printing, so every text print takes about 5 times longer than it needs to. I also find that printing settings don't seem to 'stick' to documents as they do in 9, so I need to carefully check the settings every time I open an old photo file to print. In 9, most files seem to remember how they were last printed. Another gripe I have is that errors are essentially fatal. If you run out of paper, as you would if you want to print both sides of a page, you have to start the print again. In 9 you have the option to resume a job. Maybe that's been fixed since last time I tried it. I find it annoying to have to rifle through stacks of panes looking for a setting and then to dig through other windows trying to find printer tools like tests or cleaning procedures. In the os 9 Epson drivers, there are two pages, simple and advanced. All the controls are right at your fingertips. At least in the Epson world. Some of these complaints are probably due to the Epson driver, some may be OS related. One workaround is to force Photoshop to run in Classic (done on the applications INFO page) so when I print I get the OS 9 Epson drivers. If I remember correctly, Photoshop 7 can still do this, but maybe later versions can't. It's a fix doesn't apply to apps run in X. Maybe someone could write a hack that would allow us to pass X printing jobs to Classic printer drivers through printer sharing. I love Panther, and this is my only big problem with it and my main reason for continuing to run 9 on a regular basis. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
