I'd recommend using AAC as it yields smaller and better sounding files............

Greetings all,
This is a question regarding iTunes versions. I launched my iTunes 4.7 for the first time, loaded an .aiff file, and THEN discovered that I can no longer convert to MP3, but instead I have to choose AAC format (MP4) - for my teaching needs this is about as useful as a 2-wheel Yugo. So, I go upstairs to my other G3, where I still have iTunes 4.5. Whew! I can convert to MP3 (I've never used the 4.7 that just sits in a squirreled-away folder). So, thinking I'd better get this back on my other G3, I copied iTunes 4.5 from the one machine to the other that has 4.7 on it. Now back on the first machine, I squirrel away iTunes 4.7, put 4.5 in the Applications Folder, replace dock icons, go to my user preferences folder and trash the iTunes preferences. I launch 4.5 and proceed through the set-up panels (for first time users) saying "no" to everything, and import in the .aiff file .... RATS! I can only convert to AAC! No MP3 conversion selection is available.
What gives? Are there other preferences or extensions that I need to trash to successfully make my "other" G3 backwards-compatible to be running the older iTunes? Or.. Does anyone have an even older iTunes that would assure me of MP3 conversion opportunities? (or can I lift the OEM iTunes off my Jaguar installer?).
Please advise - your help is much appreciated. FYI, I do not have an iPod, so AAC is not needed, nor is having an "authorized" machine on either G3 an issue (if it would be at all).
Many, many thanks for the assistance. Best regards, Dana
