I have been meaning for some time to ask this list for a simple,
straightforward way to make a backup copy of a bootable partition on one of
my HDD's for storage on another large HDD on another machine. The machines
are "ethernetworked." The machine I want to store to is running OS X 10.3.6.
The source machines are OS 9.x. Will I get a reliable backup (bootable) if I
call up the source partition on the OS X Desktop via ethernet, and then
simply "Duplicate" the source partition by either the File or contextual
menus? These copies would then be moved to the target storage drive. How
about if instead of using "Duplicate," I use the "Copy....." and "Paste
Item" commands on the contextual menu? What I'm concerned about here is that
for some reason I don't understand, I won't get a bootable copy by these
means. If I have to, I'll go get involved with applications like Retrospect
or Carbon Copy Cloner; but if it can be done, I'd just as soon stick with
what I've got.
What I'm ultimately trying to do here is to have a reliable backup that
I can reload to the source machine and reboot if anything should go wrong
with that machine's HDD. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks. John Hixson
