Very simple. First of, in the Mac World this is called an "alias" (as opposed to "shortcuts" in the PC world). Now to do this you just click on the item (program, file, whatever) to select it, then go the the File menu on top of your screen and then "make an alias". You're done. A new file appears with the same name plus "alias" at the end of it. Just move it to where it's convenient to you (like the desktop) and you can even change the name to whatever you want. Enjoy.
