the updates from the links in OS 9 Helper. If I can do it with ease and

but I don't plan to put OS X on my G3 at all if I can avoid it --
For what it is worth, I ran OSX on a PTP 225 with G3 400ZIF and it was very functional with some additional RAM and a better video card. One of the nice things about the older boxes is you can find sticks of RAM reasonably priced and likewise old video cards at reasonable prices. Never tried anything beyond 10.1.5 as we sold the machine, but it served very nicely to start playing with OS X and decide on computing choices for the future. A pulled 16 MB ATI card and 512 of appropriate RAM cost less than $100.00 total on flea bay.

1. Too rich for my blood: Apple's not giving it away, and I'd also have
to buy more RAM since what my G3 came with (96 MB) isn't enough to run
it. And frankly, if somehow a lot of money dropped on my head and this
was no longer an issue, I'd just replace my G3 entirely with one of those
nice new G4 iBooks which already comes with OS X and enough RAM to run it
properly. ;-)
Panther will be costly, but you can find bargain priced copies of Jaguar and that is not a bad place to begin dabbling in OS X.

2. I'm concerned about some of the issues I've seen in posts on this list
over the months about problems a number of OS X users have had with
printing. <snip> ............. The ability I presently have to print out
word-processed documents and PICT files on my antiquated but beautifully
functional Apple Personal LaserWriter 300 is just as important to me as
being able to create these documents and files in the first place, as
well as to be able to email, chat online, or go on the web if I have to
-- and I don't want any trouble out of the computer or the printer. IOW, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Which brings us back to #1 above: if
money fell out of the sky, along with that G4 iBook, I'd find out what
laser printer I could just plug it into and run printouts as easily as I
do with my present setup, and buy one of those too. ;-)
Actually OS X supports more printers than OS 9 ever even thought of, the problem becomes older printers that need connectivity (serial ports) that OS X does not include as standard and or PCL or PPD problem. There are ways around all these issues (Sweet has a serial port that can be installed in new Mac's in place of the built in modem, that will connect Apple serial devices to a modern PowerMac), between CUPS and GIMP there's a workable driver solution foir almost anything) however, if what you have now works, and you happy with it, why change.

What Mac are you using? And yes, it WOULD be interesting to hear from OS
9.2.1 and 9.2.2 regular users who can provide knowledgeable comparisons
between the two -- and even compare them with 9.1 also. Anyone out there
care to comment?
Several Mac's, around here. all running 10.3.6
2002 MDD wind tunnel, dual 867 G4, 2.GB RAM
2003 iMac 1.33 G4 1 GB RAM
2004 iBook 1.0 G4, 768 MB RAM

The Powermac does all the heavy lifting, the iMac is used daily, the iBook is used occasionally. Only the MDD can boot into OS9 and I don't think I have done that for over a year. OSX with Classic handles all the chores.
