Just for balance, I have no problem printing in OS X (10.3.6) to my 1993 vintage Apple LaserWriter Pro 630 via Ethernet, now through an Asante router/hub, and no problem printing to my more recent HP DeskJet 952C via USB. My current 'puter is a nifty Dual 2.0 G5, but I used the same setup with the same success with my recently retired B&W G3 (OS up to 10.2).
At the same time, my wife prints just fine to either printer via AirPort to that router/hub from her iMac 800 G4, also on 10.3.6.
And yes, we have access to all the printer functions, from paper quality and image resolution to ColorSync and paper handling--just as we always had in OS 9. All of this convenience is courtesy of the standard installation and standard configuration of computer and printer, without third-party software, etc.
