I am using OS X.3.6 and I do have QT Pro, but after I translated a Quicktime movie to DV, the movie played fine but there was no audio. I have a TDK DVD burner in an external Firewire enclosure, so no iDVD.
You aren't actually out of luck with iDVD. Using the "Hurz/Phurz" hack you can burn to an external DVD burner or to a disk image. What is the Hurz/Phurz hack? See:

Note that when they say to control-click on the burn icon in iDVD, they mean to click once to reveal the burn icon, then control click the burn icon. You'll see what I mean when you get there. Also the Hurz/Phurz files must be at the top level of your home folder.
