I wish I was the type who paid more attention to what was actually being discussed. I just showed myself that I don't really read half of what is being discussed. I proved this to myself today when I bought an Airport Express to extend the reach of my home Airport network. I added the Airport Express and tried to set the new password by putting a $ at the beginning. It gave me an error. I read through the documentation that came with the Airport and Airport Express and nowhere did I see anything about adding a $ in front of the password. I called Apple and held for about 15 minutes. When I finally got to ask about this password business, the man said that the $ only applied to Windows computers accessing an Airport network. I said to myself "I can't believe the mis-information I get on the G-List." I was going to come back and blast all of you for this 'mis-information', but then I started reading through some of the posts and guess what....it really helps if you read the ENTIRE post.
I'm certainly happy that I did that and didn't come back in here and make a fool of myself.
Anyway, carry on.....
The $ is used to enter a hex value where a phrase is expected. This is for an encryption key, not a password. Unfortunately sometimes an encryption key is referred to as a password.
You basically need to use the $ when one end or the other is non-Apple.
Note that there is also the base station password which IS a password for changing the base station settings. It is independent of the WEP encryption key.
