The only browser that would work for me on 9.1 is the Wamcom Mozilla 1.3(?). The regular Mozilla wouldn't work but the Wamcom one does. I have Explorer and it wouldn't work at all. This is on a 3400c btw. On my G3 I've moved up to Jaguar and I can get gmail on it, I just forget which browser works, I've got a few on there.
Get the Wamcom version and you'll be fine. Or, move up to OS X.
