though you should probably have a ups any way, though of course those don't run
forever though a
large one (mine any way) will run for hours if nearly everything is turned off,
and you can add
external batteries to some without too much hassle. and of course in an
emergency, depending on
where you live there is always the neighbors phone (people are friendly where i
am, and close
enough, i know that isn't true everywhere, though i've lived without any phone
at all before, though
it would kill me now that i'm a web junky).

also, if you are security paranoid, be aware that dsl phones are fairly easy to
monitor remotely via
"frequency flooding", apparently. not a biggie for most people, it's not an
trivial attack, you'd
be dealing with people who could bug you any way (techies or law enforcement,
which thanks to the
patriot act, is any law enforcement agency, even if it isn't terrorism related,
and without any
evidence of a "crime", despite the lies Ashcroft has been spreading, while the
justice department is
running seminars for district attorneys on how to use the patriot act in non
terrorism cases. it's
not specific at all, it basically removes nearly all of the checks and
balances, and accountability).
