I have a Cannon Powershot A300, which is a 3.2 MP, and it works great! I don't think a higher MP camera is going to be better for most pictures, that are at max, going to be 5x7 prints. I can even get decent 8x10 prints, if needed as is.
My only complaint is that it only has digital zoom, which is pretty much useless as far as "quality" zoom goes.
Make sure to get decent rechargable batteries with it, and a charger. Much cheaper than batteries! :-)
Check Tigerdirect.com for prices on the cameras also. You should be able to find a decent camera for your daughter for under $200.
Does your G3 have USB on it? If not, you will have to add a card to your G3.

Canon is an excellent choice, as are Nikon and Olympus as well. The A70 is no longer available, having been replaced by the A75. Here is the rundown from dealcam.com:
