First, you need to use Disk Warrior to fix all your partitions on the HD. If you don't own it, buy it. Odds are, that will fix the HD problem(s). (Do you really need 4 partitions?) As for the zip, Iomega's stuff is notoriously flakey and subject to frequent premature death. Replacement IDE zip drives are about $10 a piece, buy a replacement. OS 8.6 should have talked to all your devices just fine. Yeah, I agree that going to OS X is ultimately better, but if you have a 12GB drive partitioned into 4 drives, that is impractical, you will end up with a very small boot partition, which is a sin under OS X.
