DVD converted usually means much bigger files as they are css encrypted
to protect and save space. Mac the Ripper will convert the whole dvd to
unencrypted files - the vob (video object) files are the video and can then
be converted to QT or whatever file format you wish with something like
Ffmpegx. But the files will be very big. I work with Final Cut Pro in
768x576 PAL at 25FPS and one minute of footage exported to uncompressed QT
movie is around 170MB.
I think you will have to use the small mpeg4 format to get anywhere near
a cd-r.
A G4 400mhz can certainly play full screen movies in uncompressed QT
format - avi is a format I have never used.

Use the 3ivx encoder available at <www.3ivx.com>. It's a Quicktime DiVX plugin that works well, especially on older machines. You'll first need to rip the DVD (as mentioned above) and then convert the files to DiVX format. You will fit about 1 hour of video (assuming that you also encode the audio as 128kps MP3) on a CD-R. Most of your movies will end up on two discs.

As long as nothing is running in the background a G4/400 has no problem running a 640x480+ DiVX file in full screen mode. Especially if you use VLC <www.videolan.org>.

I've got 450+ CDs of stuff in this format and it plays just fine on my Sawtooth/400/Panther.
