Continuing thanks to Bruce Johnson, Kyle Hansen, Clark Martin, Jack Russel and Joshua Coombs. Bruce, thanks for the link to the specs page. The PDF from Apple didn't include the information, (OK, it did, but it was in tiny font unreadable to me,) that the Cluster Node version of the G5 Xserve could not use PCI expansion, (no slots) optical drive, (no bay) and can only use one hard drive, (only one hard drive bay.) So this particular attempt is over.

Yes Kyle, I was trying to turn it into a desktop. I might have had the opportunity to buy a G5 Xserve for less than $1000. Those of us at the lower end of the economic spectrum need to think outside the computer case. But I appreciate your concern and it was the caution of both yourself and Bruce that encouraged me to closely look at the specs page, discovering that it was impossible to adapt this Cluster Node Xserve. Thank you.

That said, if the opportunity presents itself that one of the other two styles of G5 Xserve are available to me for cheap, there are still a couple things that would be good to know. Bruce, I'm confused about ethernet on this. I asked, "The Apple document says there are two ethernet sockets on the motherboard. Can those be used directly or does one need to use the optional PCI-X card?" To which you answered, "Yes." As there were two questions I am unsure which one you were saying yes to. Would you please clarify?

If one were to add video and audio I was thinking of an ATI Radeon 9200 Mac Edition PCI card with 128MB of memory and probably a M-audio sound card. Any reason to think that the PCI-X slots would be incompatible with those?

The specs page, (thanks Bruce) has a good picture of the guts of the Xserve except for the Cluster Node version. Anyone know where one can find a picture of the inside of that? The specs page has some contradictory information that a picture would clear up.

Thanks to all. "Life, that will be a great adventure" Robin Williams as Peter Pan.
