I bought a G4/Sawtooth/AGP, 400mhz (upgraded from
original 350 that I still have), 768mb RAM (3x
brandname 256 PC133), stock ATI vid card.
I have an IDE DVD-R, CD-Rom, Zip, and 2 different hard
drives.
This machine worked fine for a few months until my
Mother-In-Law came over, and I let her log in and use
it for e-mail and stuff while she was in town.
Suddenly it started to have lots of problems.. I know
it's nothing she did, because she is generally nervous
around computers.
My Mac freezes up hard. Usually after 45 minutes of
work. I have to restart it (or shut down) using the
reset/power buttons. No key combinations can change
anything, and Caps-Lock doesn't change on pressing.
The freezing seems to be UI related. It freezes 90%
of the time immediatly after clicking, during
clicking, or during dragging. The last 10% of the
time it freezes when just moving the mouse. I can
leave it on for hours running any diagnostic or
testing tool, and have not had any problems until
after I am using the mouse.
I have tried..
-Repairing Permissions
-Zapping PRAM
-Reset Firmware
-Reset PMU
-TechTools
-Reinstall Panther with all Updates.
-Checked RAM
-Tried Different Mouse
-Tried Without Keyboard
-Reformat a different Hard Drive and Install Panther
-Remove all other IDE devices.
-Try other IDE cables and channel
-Try external power supply for Hard Drive.
I checked the RAM by putting it in a PC, booting to
MemTest86+ and running for 24 Hours.. no errors came
up.
I have booted from a few different diagnostic CDs
without major issue, but there really isn't enough on
any of the CDs to keep me moving and clicking like
when booting off the Hard Drive to really test it. I
don't think it's an issue with any of my IDE devices.
I suspect my video card is at fault here.. and since
it's just the old Rage it could use an upgrade, but I
don't want to spend the cash on a video card if my
Logic Board is at fault.
Does anybody have any suggestions? I'm open to
anything. Send me an e-mail even if you think I
didn't do one of the steps above correctly. I'm
stumped.
