I don't think I'd have a problem with the power these folks wield...if their
past history did not show such a blatant disregard for the law. The phrase
"Sed quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" definitely suggests itself.

Another thing: lawbreaking aside, can't they at least exercise good taste?
That logo they came up with for the Information Awareness Office was Just
Plain Tacky:

Admittedly, they took it down quickly enough once people started staring in
amazement. It was just too weird that they put it up in the first place.

Of course, it should be said in their defense that they seem to be Very Open
Minded, what with employing convicted felons and all. _

Is the encryption obvious to anyone monitoring transmission? It'd be "cool"
if Carnivore (or some such automated tool) had a special "seek" feature that
would automatically sniff out and pay particular attention to encrypted
channels.

What, and stink the place up? Just git yerself one o' them there fancy
paper shredders that meet NSA/CSS Specification 02-01 for High Security
Cross Cut Paper Shredders. Perhaps "shredder" is a misnomer here; these
puppies actually randomly particalize the paper. There's just no playing
"crosswords" with the end result of these machines.

Oddly enough, Wal-Mart does not sell these. But they are indeed available
on the open market.

Of course, I'd like to take this opportunity to say how proud I am to live
in a country where such fine products are available. After all, if I can't
get time on the NSA's supercomputers, I can at least make sure that my paper
shredder is as good as theirs!

Best,

James Fraser
