Here's my 2 cents. DVD-R's have a 90% compatibility rate in all DVD players.
DVD+R has a 80% rate. So my advice to ANY one is use DVD-R for movies and
DATA, and use DVD+RW for reusable data. I have ran across DVD players that
will not use + discs but had a perfect rate with -R discs, I tried them in
several players including friends machines. +RW are even worse! So only use
DVD-R for movies. In fact there is not even an advantage that a consumer can
really take with a +R disc any way. Its the +RW that have the advantage over
-RW discs. +RW work like a floppy or hard disc, you can change files and
erase bits of data at a time, -RW you have to start all over like a CD-RW
would.
