Hey Chris, I just put together a gigabit ethernet based "FrankenMac" this week. Based on what I have read the motherboard needs the 28v to power up, if it is not there it will not power up.
There are a couple of approaches that I know of. First, you can just buy an Apple GigE power supply, but I think the cheapest one of those I found was about $180 plus shipping. Second, you can refer to this site, http://www.themacaddress.com/pnews.php?page=mdd_psu which will tell you to buy a Mirrored Door Drive power supply off of ebay and rewire the motherboard connector so that it works with the GigE motherboard. In the article he talks about either slipping the pins out of the mobo connector with a small jewelers screwdriver or cutting the wires about an inch above the connector and soldering them in the "right" places. This is actually the route I took, except I cut the wires and used 18 ga. wire crimps to re connect them in the right places. I found that trying to get the pins out of the connector with a jewelers screwdriver was next to impossible, I did find a tool online that would remove the pins from the connector but it cost about $18 and I didn't want to spend that or wait for it to show up. One caution if you are going to look for that tool, there is a similar tool that is made for the hard drive and CD-rom power connectors, it is a lot bigger than the one needed for the mobo connector, don't be misled there. Third, you can use an ATX power supply and add a seperate 28v wallwart supply for those 2 pins. I think you also need to rewire the ATX supply. You can see this approach here; http://www.outofspec.com/frankenmac/ and specifically this page; http://www.outofspec.com/frankenmac/wire.shtml I probably would have went with the ATX option if I already had one laying around, but I didn't I only have one ATX supply and it is being used, the spares I had were all the old AT style. I know that is more info that you requested, I just wanted to share what I had learned over the past couple of weeks. My modified MDD is working like a champ!
