The mac-standard Stuffit (www.stuffit.com) from Aladdin is available on 
the windows side.  .sit and .sitx have even better compression then 
regular zip.  bzip2 is actually better then both of those, but use 
isn't so widespread.

Full networking requires pay software as far as I know.
But you can put free FTP server software on either the PC (eg Cerberus,
<http://www.cerberusftp.com/>) or Mac and easily send files back and
forward. Or if you can't be bothered with that, just email them.
I find it saves hassles if you put files in ZIP archives before sending
between platforms; free software, like "ZipIt" <www.maczipit.com>  can 
make
and unpack zips on Macs.
