I never tried to erase a Zip with OSX's utility, since I don't have an OSX Mac to which I can connect my SCSI Zip 100 drives.
If you have the full installation of the Iomega software , there is a utility called "Tools". If you test your disks periodically with Tools, it will report the "Disk life remaining" and the "Format life remaining". As soon as either one of them drops to around 80% o so, it is due for complete failure very soon. At that point, they can't be formatted with the Iomega software or the Macintosh "Erase Disk command.
BTW, Iomega will replace failed Zip disks for free. (Zip 100's at least). There is a place on their website to make a claim. I have had more failed Zip disks than I ever had with floppies, and over the years have returned over 2 dozen for replacement.
