No they're not universal and some work better in a mac than others. Some
are bootable and some not - some work with iapps and some don't but can be
made to work with custom plugins. The best place to search for compatibility
is the accelerate your mac drive compatibility database where users have
posted their experiences installing all kinds of cdrw and dvd drives in a
mac.
The Liteon 52x32x52 cdrw works very well in a mac - as do all the
Pioneer dvd writers...
