I run around 40 feet to the wall, and then the wall jacks are fed with Cat5 to the phone company drop in the basement which isn't twisted pair. Knowing rare people actually have anything better than twisted pair in the wall, they most commonly have plain phone cable, and the phone company doesn't run more than shielded solid conductor (again, not twisted) to the pole, I would expect you can run nearly any reasonable length with out any real significant penalty. It isn't really fast enough to have ringing or other issues.

Don't coil it up or do otherwise strange things to the wire, keep it free and open of loops to minimize any inductive tendencies.

I connect at 45333 often, and with the same wire on my IBM A31P laptop I get 44k-51k often as well.

Can anyone tell me how far away you can have a CPU from a phone jack (for a

I've never heard of any particular limit to the length of line between the
jack and the modem, if that's what you mean. There might be issues if the
piece of line is of poor quality, causing noise or distortion, but other than
that, to the device on the end of the line, for all practical purposes it
looks the same if it's 5 feet or 50. I think you'd have to go a lot longer
than that before attenuation became a factor. In fact, that's what I used to
use to connect my modem before broadband: a 50 foot extension. Connection
speeds were fine.
