Subject: Re: Need wireless advice

We're connected via cable broadband with a Linksys cable modem and a
Linksys
router.
Advice on what to get for base station (transmitter?) and receivers
would
be much appreciated.

Question: if one uses an Airport base station, is the only option
Airport
cards, or are there any other compliant options?

Many, many thanks.
Dana
-------------------------------------------------------------------

The Original Airport base and Airport cards are just 802.11b Wi-Fi
devices and are compatible with all 802.11b devices. The new Airport
Extreme line are 802.11g and are like wise compatible. B and G
equipment are also compatible though they have different speeds. B is
11Mbps (Megabits per second) and G is 54Mbps. Using B devices with G
however will cause them to work at the slower speed. Now for using the
internet 802.11b is going to be faster that you internet connection, but
if you want to transfer files between computers, share your mp3 library,
or use an airport express to play music on your stereo you probably want
to go with an all G setup.

Now the Airport base station is one of the nicest consumer level units
available, however it is also one of the most expensive (somewhere over
$200 IIRC.) AFAIK all of the newer base station / routers are setup
through a web interface and should be configurable from any computer.
Though I have heard some people say that the configuration pages didn't
work well on their Mac. I personally use a Netgear WGT624 which works
well with my Pismo thou I can't say that I have tried configuring it
through Safari or FireFox from my Pismo. If you would like I can. The
Linksys WTR54G(s) is also a very good wireless router.

I would also recommend that remove your existing Linksys router and just
use the wireless router in its place, as it could save you some
headaches in the future if you need to open firewall ports.
