Night and day difference for ripping MP3s and DVDs. My old G4-500 can compress an 8 Gig DVD to a 4.3 Gig DVD in 1 hour... That's not too shabby. I don't know about a g3-700 or the sonnet g4-1000 (it only has a 66mhz fsb). If your going to run OS X get the G4. Mac OS 9 will be fine on the G3. Heck an older 604e 200mhz runs mac os 9 just fine.
