When I tried to turn on the ethernet port, it said that my ISP would cancel my service so I don't interrupt theirs.
I am so confused now.

Huh???

You probably got a message 'If you switch your internet connection now it will interrupt your current one' which means you were trying to switch the wrong computer from modem to ethernet, and is an error from OS X not a threat from Earthlink.

Here's how to do what I think you're trying, in good 'ol ACSII:

Connect everything like this

Outside world---Phone line---modem ethernet ----router---- ethernet
                                  iBook iMac

1) On iBook (primary internet connection the modem) go to the Sharing panel of System Preferences. Click on Internet

It should say something like 'You currently have an active connection to the Internet over Built-in Modem. Select an option below.'

Depending on the computer and OS version you will have one or more checkboxes (I'm looking at the 10.2 version right now), select Built-in Ethernet and click the start button.

2) On the other Mac, go into the Network pane of System refs and select Built-in ethernet in the 'show' drop down. Click on TCP/IP. Select Configure: Using DHCP. Click Apply Now.

Your mac should think a moment, and if your network is functioning, should get an IP, subnet mask, and router address in the 10.0.1.x range (IIRC, that's what my current setup is shpowing, but my network has changed.)

The second mac should be able to surf the internet now, and Earthlink is none the wiser.
