    It may be that the Philips is not picking up the lead in on the dvd disc
- I have a Philips recorder which has problems reading dvds. After about a
minute of trying to read the disc it reports it as an empty disc even though
it's a retail disc. Sometimes disconnecting from the power will reset it and
then it recognises and reads the disc and brings up the menu. Other times
nothing will work - so I bought a cheap player and that plays any and all my
discs no problem - every disc I've burned with a Pioneer 108 and the Liteon
1633s will play first time of asking. The Philips works fine as a recorder -
just no good as a player....
