Update:
I looked through Apple's pages and decided to zap the PRAM, which worked... kind of.
It displayed the screen with the grey apple and then went black again (where the screen changes resolution).
I managed to boot off of an OS X disk and I repaired permissions and after a few more zap PRAM I eventually managed to start up from my iBook 800 as a T-disk (FW disk) and I am currently copying everything off my main drive onto another internal drive so that I can reformat and do a clean reinstall, but if that doesn't work I'm stuck.
Any ideas why this happened and what cures / prevents it ?
