Personally I would like to see Appleworks continued and if iWorks is to be the new Appleworks, I would like the database and spreadsheet included. I am not an Appleworks expert, but I find that multi-use software like Appleworks can sometimes accomplish things that single-use tools can't.

I use Excel daily at work and I don't NEED (and nor do 90% of the people using it) all of the functions available. I'm convinced that it is far too complex for the average user unless they have had proper training. Excel is so complex that it actually slows down our work flow as there are too many options available. It maybe a problem with the hardware (Fujitsu and Dell) but I cannot open more than one spreadsheet without an "Out of memory" message (this with no other apps open and a 2.4ghz Dell thing with 512MB RAM - my 400mhz/512MB Pismo can open loads of them even with other apps open)

The AppleWorks (get a new name!!) pack is a very good allround package (you could drop the Painting bit - whoever uses that?) and you'll cover most office work with it. If you need professional software then FileMaker or a custom solution is probably your best option

Over the next couple of months I'm going to be testing AppleWorks against Excel in some of our work situations - I'll let you know :-)
