Try zapping the pram!

What OS are you running? I have a Powerbox Radeon 8500 that works fine
in my Sawtooth, but when I was studying the listings by Powerbox and
others selling similar cards, they seemed to all agree you needed 9.2.1
or 10.2 or higher to run the cards. This was true for both PCI and AGP
boards.

FWIW, my experience with my Powerbox Radeon 8500 has been very
satisfying - supports extended desktop, quartz extreme, both video out
ports and runs like a champ under 10.3.7. Based on my research,
Powerbox's 8500 cards are the most cost effective way to significantly
upgrade the video on a Sawtooth. I've been thinking about a 64MB
Radeon 7000 from them for my B&W, so I am very interested in how this
turns out.

General rule of thumb; whenever I change hardware or software,
including OSs, I always zap the PRAM. Solves a host of problems.
Before starting up hold down the option, apple, R and P keys. I
usually let it restart five times. Also TechTool is helpful with this,
but I find doing it manually more complete. Or, alternatively,
removing the PRAM battery over night. Sometimes pushing the mobo reset
button helps too. Also called the "CUDA" reset button, it is located in
the back left corner of a G3 motherboard next to the PCI slot closest
to the edge. If you choose to do this be careful of static
electricity. I work on my Macs in the garage with a concrete floor.
I've heard a good way to dissipate the S.E. is to leave the Mac plugged
in and touch the metal chassis. The ground dissipates the S.E. Then
unplug the Mac before continuing. Try to not be on a rug. If you
must, when you have dissipated the S.E. don't move your feet until you
are done. Good luck,

I've had a similar problem...

...try removing the VGA adapter from the standard video output of the
G3. In my case it helped

The Mac thinks you have two screens. You need to re-arrange them in
Monitors control panel. - and set which one you want to be "Start-ip@ screen

Ted

-------------------------

Ted wins, but here are the details in case anyone wants to know.

Here's a recap of where I started.

Biege G3 233 with maxed memory (768mb).installed a Radeon 7000 w/64 megs from
Powerbox Technology on Ebay - a"flashed" (whatever that means) PC card because
the Mac 7000s only get 32 megs. Bought to power new Viewsonic 19" LCD. Install
went fine, shows up in System Profiler, but for some reason, the display
doesn't show my desktop. Pattern's there, but all my files (and hard drive icon
and menu bar) are off the screen to the left. I know this because a few of the
files I left on my desktop peek in from the left. It's as if my desktop is 5
feet wide, what WAS my desktop with all my stuff is in the center (actually
left), and the monitor only shows the right hand side of the desktop. I can't
get to the apple menu to configure anything. Can't even see my harddrive.

I've tried both types of cables, the blue smaller head and the white Digital
Video cable, and I get the same thing.

I neglected to say I'm running 9.2.2, and that I went through every control
panel, every combination of anything, tried TWO cables at once, one in the
original Mac output which let me see my desktop and the other the DVI cable
which gave me far right desktop. Zapped Pram every time I switched something, 7
times each time about 6 "bongs" (for good measure).

The monitor control panel (using the stock output) had no indication of
anything different from when I had my CRT monitor - "Monitor" and "Color" were
the only choices I had. Then later on (oh, about the third beer) it showed
"Preferences", but that only gave me the extra choice of "Pointer Visibility"
and the faded out (not available) choice of "Hide Pointer on this monitor"
which made me think it was that left monitor/righ monitor thing going on.

This morning, monitor running off the stock monitor output (at least can see my
desktop) my wife checks her email. Then I check G-list and all the above
suggestions are there. I think, "There is hope." The first thing I do is have
another look at the Monitors control panel. WHA-HUH?!?!?!? NOW THERE ARE FOUR
CHOICES, the new one being "ARRANGE"(!!). Not only does it show two monitors
side-by-side but (SHOCK!) there are instructions on how to change arrangement,
to duplicate monitors (and cancel), relocate the menu bar and change the
startup monitor.

So I'm thinking either the new card needed a good night's sleep to be up and
running, or the IT fairies came in and configured everything last night. I know
it wasn't the IT fairies (there was an "incident" the last time), I tried some
other things. I opened my control panels window and slid it half-way off the
monitor so I could access it from either "screen", now that I knew they were
side-by-side. By opening the Monitors CP from one side, I got one titled
"Multiple Scan Display" with the extra "Preferences Choice" and opening it on
the other screen (the right/DVI one) I got another one titled "VP912b (1)" -
VP912b" is the model of my Viewsonic LCD, and that showed the "Arrange" choice.
Yep, TWO monitors control panels.

I dragged and swapped and now I have everything on the VGI-indicated monitor.

To all who chimed in: THANKS!!! This List is like so many - when I have no
where to turn at midnight, I no longer feel alone and helpless - like I said, I
got the feeling that there is hope, and that's priceless. I'd buy you all a
beer if we weren't spread across the world.

Thanks to all, and have a great weekend!

M.
