Personally though I keep MacLinkPlus from DataViz around for cases just like this. A little pricey, but worth it with all the .whattheheckisthis files I get ;)

On my PC at work, I designate .wpd as WordPad, (because I sometimes need it to open stuff and not use notepad which is .txt only) which is a RTF and Text file editor. You can try to rename the extension .rtf or .txt and see what you get out it.
