You folx have some specific brand/model likes and dislikes, for *inexpensive* CRTs or LCDs, keyboards etc?

DO NOT GO CHEAP ON THE MONITOR!!

I'm not asking for cheap. I'm asking for inexpensive. There is a diff.

I need to optimize the cost vs the quality of what I'm adding onto the basic Mac Mini box. If the package gets too expensive, the customer goes back to Dell. If the package gets too cheap, things break - and the customer goes back to Dell.

It's annoying that cruddy PC hardware/software is acceptable, and even expected. But Macs have to live up to their quality reputation, or else! That's just the way the market works. :\

My new upgrade strategy is to get a big honkin' LCD (such as Apple's 23") and make that last 10 years. That's what I did with my previous monitor, which I bought in 1994 when I was using PCs.

Good luck. IMO, the failure rate of those big honkin expensive LCDs just doesn't seem to lend themselves to that type of longevity. And that doesn't count the visual quality issues (below).

That being said, I am still a CRT holdout.

Me too. :)

While the flat panels look good and take up less desk space, I still prefer the picture from my CRTs.

Perhaps you've never used a digital (ADC or DVI) LCD? Analog (VGA) LCDs aren't worth it to me, but digital ones are simply amazing - now that I've gone digital, it's hard for me to use anything else.

For general/home surfing and such, the analog LCDs are ok. For my immediate purposes, outfitting Mac Mini systems, an inexpensive CRT or analog LCD would be just fine.

For movie watching, the digital LCDs are sexy, but a very expensive solution.

For professional work that requires decent color reproduction... LCDs stink. They're just not there yet, regardless of price. Their color reproduction is terrible and their refresh rate is visually annoying. Apple's new behemouth is almost there, but I've yet to see one without display artifacts (improperly hot/bright pixels, improperly cold/dim pixels, dead pixels, etc).

FWIW,
- Dan.
