My son=B9s iMac g3 refuses to start. Pressing the power key gives no sound =
nor
does the button light.

I changed to a suspected good pram battery and now I get an almost start.
I get the bong, the light goes orange then green for 1-2 seconds and then
nothing. Total shutdown.

Is this normal for the early iMacs with a dead pram battery or is it fina=
lly
DOA? I'll have to go hunting for a battery tomorrow as the local Radio
Shacks are more interested in selling cell phones than electronics. I wan=
t
to know if its going to be worth the effort. Or should I just hold off fo=
r
the mini-Macs.

Sounds like a dead analogue board. Sadly common on early iMacs.

I would try a KNOWN good PRAM battery.
