I just remembered about the "system enabler" angle -- Apple has at times released models with the then-current OS, but the "special" disks had a special "system enabler" that provided the code needed for the new model to boot. My OS 8.1 CD, for example, designated for the (beige) G3, has a "System Enabler 777" in its boot folder, & in the system folder that it installs. (BTW, this particular CD works with other PPC machines of more or less that era. Some CDs don't.)
