hello all...
i'm new to os x.
i have a g4 w/ 10.3.2 and i've been trying to install my apps and get things running.
i'm a little confused about why i seem to have sets of library and prefs folders.
both exist on my system drive (one in the ((cute?)) little "house" folder), and one set in the sys folder.
the library(-ies) seem to have some duplicate folders in them (likewise the Prefs folders)
can i delete one set of these (copying the unique, single instances of stuff) and move everything into one folder?
and.... would my apps still be able to find the helper files?
(p.s. - what is that stupid little house folder anyway? can i get rid of that?)
i find some things about os x completely stupid.
thanks in advance
ray b
Hello Ray.
No you cannot remove these. They are not duplicate directories, but they are similarly named directories. OS X is a multi-user Unix system, and each user has his own "home directory." Inside that home directory you have your own Preferences and other things. Every other user has his own unique preferences as well. The system also has preferences (such as Network settings and such) which are unique to the system, not unique to each user.
That "stupid little house folder" is your home directory, and you cannot remove this. All of your files should go in there, except Applications which you install. You can put those in /Applications if you like, or you can create your own Applications directory in your home folder. I do the latter, but that is merely personal preference.
I'm sorry to hear that you find "some things about os x completely stupid," because it is actually a very well-designed and well-written system.
