Seems so to me too, but apparently for what ails this tape, it is what the
doctor ordered.   The machine is clean and only exhibits this problem on certain
tapes, all, I suspect of the same brand from the same years (early 90's.)

According to the article I cite below, the "scream" I get when the tape runs
through the machine is due to oxide shedding which is a failure of the chemical
binder that holds the oxide to the backing.  I remember having this problem with
audio reel to reel tapes years ago.  Heating the tape to 120F re-cures the
binding and can be repeated over time as it occurs again.  This guy says it is
fool proof and harmless.

My only concern at this point is using it on fragile Hi8 tape, since the sources
I've found are talking about audio and heavier video tapes.
