The CUDA reset should work, either before or after installation. In my experience, all the ATI drivers are installed, regardless of what card is in the machine. The CUDA reset reverts information in NVRAM about your hardware to the factory defaults. Resetting PRAM changes the software setting back to default.

It remains unclear which VR card you have. ATI shows two possibilities in the legacy products section. The Xclaim VR had 4 MB of VRAM, standard, and the VR 128 had 16 MB. There is no mention of a VR Pro. Any idea how much VRAM is in your card? The System Profiler should be able to tell you.
