As others here have said, the number of stars in the password box has absolutely nothing to do with the number of characters in your password. If it does not accept your password, either you have mis-typed it, or you have not remembered your password correctly. I believe the password is case-sensitive. If all else fails, boot off the OS X install disc and reset your password.
